Sponge project

Sponge project

After world’s largest coral transportation in 2001, the isle of Curacao and the Dutch zoo ‘Diergaarde Blijdorp’ again had a worldwide scoop. This time it was the largest transportation of sponge transplants to a public aquarium. Rather 125 transplants of more then ten sponge species arrived in good health in Rotterdam.

The preparation of this transport took a few months and Atlantis Diving placed all their facilities and equipment at the disposal of the research. After the transplants were collected, they got time to recover, before getting transported to The Netherlands. The sponges will further develop in the new ‘deep reef aquarium’ at Diergaarde Blijdorp.

The knowledge we gained during this project we will use in the lasting struggle to protect and preserve the reefs around Curacao.
